Marta Batista

PhD student, FCT fellow
Marta Batista is a Biochemistry PhD candidate at [BioISI - Biosystems & Integrative Sciences Institute/FCUL???]. With a doctoral studentship granted by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) in 2023, she’s currently investigating pH regulation in aquaporin-7 and aquaporin-10 using computational approaches such as Constant-pH Molecular Dynamics simulations.
She holds a BSc in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and an MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from the same institution, where she was a research fellow under the BioISI Junior Program studying the permeation of solutes through the aquaporin of Plasmodium falciparum. This research, compiled in her Master thesis “Development of a new hybrid therapeutic agent against malaria by targeting the Aquaglyceroporin from plasmodium spp” earned her the Prémio ULisboa - RedeSAÚDE 2023 in the category of Infectious Diseases.
Before starting her PhD, she worked as a Physics and Chemistry teacher at Agrupamento de Escolas Luís António Verney and Escola Secundária do Forte da Casa.
Her technical expertise includes Molecular Dynamics and Constant-pH Molecular Dynamics, Molecular Docking, Molecular Modelling, and programming. To date, she has co-authored 3 peer-reviewed publications and delivered several poster and oral presentations at national and international conferences, for which she has received awards. Her current research interests lie in membrane proteins, pH regulation, and solute permeation.
